Bangladesh’s energy security has come under renewed focus as the country remains heavily dependent on Middle Eastern sources for both crude and refined petroleum products.

The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) imports the majority of its fuel oil from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. In addition, Bangladesh maintains long-term LNG supply agreements with Qatar and Oman.

Experts warn that any geopolitical tension or supply disruption in the Middle East could severely impact Bangladesh’s power generation, transportation, industrial output, and agriculture. Rising global prices may also increase subsidy pressure and widen the trade deficit.

Economists suggest diversifying energy import sources, boosting renewable energy investment, and expanding strategic reserves to reduce vulnerability. While authorities are taking steps to strengthen energy security, reducing overdependence on a single region remains critical for long-term stability.
